The worst thing you can do is show people how much you hate your job.
I interviewed a guy once who tole me he hated his previous job so he did the worst job he could until the company fired him. I didn’t hire him.
Not everyone is 100% happy 100% of the time at work. But, don’t show everyone how unhappy you 100% of the time! According to a 2014 report by the Conference Board, only 47.7% of Americans were satisfied with their jobs. That number improved at the glacial pace of +0.4 percentage points from the previous year.
What contributes to work happiness? Interest in work (59%) and people at work (60.6%) ranked highest among survey takers.
How can you turn around that work frown? Start with something you like to do at work. I’m talking to you, introverts. (I’m one of you!) Find a committee or project that brings you some excitement. And know that you may need to create and/or take the lead on that project.
What about the extroverts? Start making work friends. Say hello to the hottie down the hall. Ask your coworker about her kids. I went into someones office whom I did not know well and welcomed her to our company. She had been there for a few months, but I told her our paths didn’t cross much but I wanted her to know I would be available to help when the time did come.
What don’t you like? Take a second and look into this. What do you really NOT like? Can it be fixed by changing your attitude? Talking to your boss or another coworker? If it’s really something you HATE, but is something you have to do, just do it and have the rest of the day to take on that new exciting project you created.
Still unhappy? Maybe it’s time to find a new job. But, don’t do such bad work that you get fired. You still need to pay the bills.
You’ve got a lot of work ahead of you. Making it better starts with you.
